Kalispell Rockhound Club 11/17/14

Meeting was called to order at 7:12 p.m.  Minutes from the last meeting were read and approved.  The treasurer's report was given and approved. 

The Christmas party details were reiterated from the October meeting and directions to the Nelsons were provided.

Two possible summer 2015 field trips were discussed:

  1. Idaho trip to look for thunder eggs
  2. Madras, OR trip the last weekend of June.

A silent auction of rock items was held at the meeting.

The January and February meetings will be held the second Monday of the month due to the library being closed the third Mondays for holidays.

Meeting was adjourned at 7:35 after which all participated in Show & Tell, snacks and raffle.

Kalispell Rockhound Club 10/20/14

Meeting was called to order at 7 p.m.  Minutes from September were read and approved.  Treasurer report was provided and approved.

Correspondence was received from Whitefish Credit Union stating our account was active and in good standing for 5 years.  A letter from Public Land & Water Assoc. announcing their raffle was read, tickets for purchase were included.

The Blankenship Field Trip was discussed.  Members found interesting rocks and some fossils.

The Christmas party was announced to be Mon., Dec. 8 at 6 p.m. at Ron Nelsons.  The club will provide the meat and drinks, members should bring a side dish or dessert.  There will be prizes for the games played at the party.

There were 6 guests present.

Kalispell Rockhound Club
9/15/2014

Meeting was called to order at 7:15.

Minutes from the last meeting were unavailable.

Treasurer Ron Leonard reported the club had received a letter from Whitefish Credit Union saying that our account was inactive and would turned over to the state soon if no additional activity was done. So Ron moved $40 from petty cash to the account and both Ron and Dana signed the letter and returned it stating that we are still an active entity.  John & Kathryn Babcock joined as members.

Correspondence – Two credit card applications were received and a FVCC catalog for fall courses that includes some jewelry making classes.

Old Business –
1. The trip scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 21 to Blankenship Bridge area is still on. Meet at the northwest corner of Home Depot parking lot at 1 p.m. and car pool to the area.
2. The trip scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 28 to Olney area is still on. Meet at the Home Depot parking lot at 1 p.m. to carpool. Bring tools.
3. Richard announced that we were having a silent auction tonight for some items owned by the club. The auction ends after the raffle drawing.

New Business:
1. There are rock specimans, donated by Jim & Georgia Chase, available for sale.
2. Dave motioned to put Ron Leonard’s name on the Whitefish Credit Union account. Pat amended the motion to “always put the current treasurer’s name on all the club’s accounts” and the motion passed.

Kalispell Rockhound Club
8/18/2014

Meeting was called to order at 7:08.

Minutes from the last meeting were unavailable.

Treasurer Ron Leonard reported that he had been unable to complete the transition to get him on all the club’s accounts, but would do so by next meeting and have a report available then.

Correspondence – The NW Federation of Mineralogical Society had sent a receipt for our club’s membership.

Old Business - None

New Business:
1. The sapphire dig at the Nelson’s was discussed and who was going.
2. Richard informed the club of the closing of the Gold Diggers Shop in Libby and the ad in the paper for their going out of business sale.
3. The Rock Chuck Club’s picnic was announced.
4. Richard asked if someone would bring one of the mineral sample boxes to the next meeting for members to see or buy if they want to. He also suggested that the club buy any leftover boxes to be available in the future to club members.

7/21/2014


Meeting called to order at 7:10 by President Clutters. There were 9 members present.

Minutes from the June 16, 2014 meeting were read and approved.

There was no treasurer’s report.
There was no correspondence.

Old Business:
1. Malinda will call Georgia regarding the details of the picnic on August 10th. She will let her know the RockChuck group would like to join us. Malinda will also coordinate with Katherine Babcock, and then send a message to the club with the details of the picnic.
2. Ron & Pat Nelson will be at their Philipsburg claim from 8/9/14 – 8/16/14 (with family there) and 8/22/14 – 9/1/14. Anyone is welcome to join them during either time. Pat will provide everyone with details and if a member wants to attend, they should RSVP.
3. Pat suggested we consider switching our Sept. 4-8 outing to Ruby Reservoir to go to Vantage, WA instead. Discussion ensued and no decision was made.

New Business:
1. Richard brought up information on petrified wood that is for sale in ND.
2. Pat announced that Norm Coverdell is selling some of his rock collection and if anyone is interested, they should contact Norm.
3. A new treasurer is needed for the club as Pieter is unable to continue in the role. The members voted Ron Leonard into as treasurer.
4. Pat was looking for agate sites near Missoula in order to do another day trip. Dave will check with Greg Tackett of the Missoula club to see if he’s aware of such and report back.
5. Dotti will take minutes for Malinda at the August 18 meeting.
6. Richard asked what was in the club’s trailer and Ron N. indicated the following: rocks, show lights, signs, picnic supplies, tubs of stationary, PA system, projector screen and mineral collections.


Meeting was adjourned at 7:50 p.m. after which all participated in Show & Tell and Snacks. Ron Nelson also demonstrated his free form rock polishing machine that the club could build for less than $300.

6/16/2014


Meeting was called to order at 7:05 by President Clutters. There were 12 members present.

Minutes from the May 19, 2014 meeting were read and approved.

There was no treasurer’s report due to the treasurer’s absence.

There was no correspondence.

Old Business:
1. Malinda reported that the NW Federation Mineralogical Society paperwork and membership fee had been submitted.
2. Ron and Pat Nelson reported that the Star Meadow mines were researched and they found there are no active claims there at this time. The blm.gov.lr2000/indexatitm website was used.
3. Pat said she would continue to research the Flathead Mine.
4. Don asked if Kalispell Rockhound Club was affiliated with the MT Council. Dana said not at this time due to no benefits perceived.

New Business:
1. Malinda will send out the 2014 membership list to all.
2. Richard asked if our VHS tapes could be converted to DVD. Ron N will research the cost of equipment to transfer them ourselves.
3. Don told us about a “Rockhound Connection” Facebook site and suggested people may want to “like” it.
4. Georgia brought up the annual picnic and discussion ensued. Lawrence Park had not been reserved yet and all felt it had gotten too expensive. Don mentioned the Creston Fish Hatchery Park so Georgia will check on availability and cost for an August 10th picnic. Members Ron L, Georgia and Pat all indicated their homes might be an option also.
5. Field trips for the summer were discussed with the following tentative plans made:
a. July 16-20 – trip to Vantage, WA for petrified wood – Ron and Pat Nelson will provide more information on this one, since it is prior to our July club meeting.
b. August 10 – club picnic.
c. Approximately August 12-16 and August 23-31 – Ron and Pat Nelson’s Philipsburg claim.
d. September 4-8 – Ruby Reservoir and ranch for garnets and wonderstone.
e. September 21 – Blankenship Bridge area for fossils and agate – meet northwest corner of Kalispell Home Depot parking lot at 1 p.m. to head to this area.
f. September 28 – Olney area for limonite – meet northwest corner of Kalispell Home Depot parking lot at 1 p.m. to carpool to Olney.

Kalispell Rockhound Club
5/19/2014


Meeting called to order at 7:12 by President Clutters. There were 14 members present and 2 guests. Earl Colton and Patti Ormiston joined as new members.

Minutes from the April 21, 2014 meeting were read and approved.

Treasurer’s report was given.

Correspondence: The invoice for our website has been received as paid by our credit card. An email was received from 1&1 website to verify our domain name and contacts- Malinda responded.

Old Business:
1. Dana provided further information on joining the NW Federation Mineralogical Society. Malinda and Pieter will take responsibility for filing for membership.

New Business:
1. Calendars were explained and President Clutters suggested we all bring ours up to date to the June meeting so we can start planning summer outings.
2. Tiffany asked the question of why there are two rock clubs in the area. Discussion ensued regarding the historical reasons and the focus of each club. It was moved and passed that we join forces for outings and program sharing. Malinda will contact the Kalispell Rock Chucks secretary and see if they are interested in doing so.

April 21, 2014

Minutes from March 17th, 2014 meeting were read and approved.  Treasurer's report was given.  Income taxes were filed by the treasurer.

Correspondence:  Newsletter from Public Land/Water Access Association was presented by Pete.

Old Business:  Membership in the NW Federation Mineralogical Society was discussed.   Pat moved, Pete seconded and the motion was passed to join the Federation.

New Business: 

  1. Daniel had done much research on rock hounding in NW MT and presented several field trip ideas.  Pat will research land ownership and claim ownership information for the club.
  2. Don thanked us for the use of our black light at the recent Rock Show. 
  3. The next meeting will be June 16th, 7 p.m. at the ImagineIF Library.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:52 after which show & tell was done.  Daniel also presented a program with club members identifying rocks he had brought. 

February 24, 2014

Meeting was called to order at 7:07 by President Clutters.  There were 10 members and 2 guests in attendance. 

Minutes from the 1/27/14 meeting were read with one correction.  Treasurer's report was given with mention that taxes needed to be filed and account signers names updated.

Old Business:  None

New Business:

  1. The NW Federation of Mineralogical Societies has a field trip to Terry, MT from July 31-August 3, 2014.  Details were handed out.
  2. The local rock club in Madras, OR has a huge rock show with outings June 25-29, 2014.
  3. A discussion ensued regarding whether our club wanted to join the NW Federation - Dave will check into cost and report back.
  4. The Kalispell Rock Chuck Rock Show will be March 15&16 and they would like to use our black light at the show.  Pieter & Rosslyn will help Ron set it up and then man the table.
  5. Our website has been updated and minutes, by-laws and a calendar will be on the site.
  6. Spokane Rock Show is March 28-30, 2014.
  7. Clarification was made that the treasurer collects the dues and the secretary keeps membership records up to date.

The next meeting is March 17, 2014, 7 p.m. at the Imagine If Public Library basement.

Meeting was adjourned at 8 p.m. after which all participated in Show & Tell.  Then Richard gave a demonstration of his high banker machine used for gold prospecting.

January 27, 2014

Meeting was called to order at 7:18 p.m. with the new board members presiding:  Richard Clutters-President, Dana Anderson-Vice President, Malinda Shafman-Secretary, Pieter Waychoff-Treasurer.  There were 7 other members present.

Minutes from the November 25th, 2013 meeting were read.  Treasurer's report was given.

Old Business - None

New Business -

  1. Field trip suggestions for 2014 were discussed:  Gold Placer Mining, Crystal Park, Olney, Sapphire digging, Vantage WA, George WA, Lincoln MT and attending other rock clubs' outings.
  2. Program ideas for 2014 were discussed:  Gold Placer Mining demonstration and MT Property Access regulations.
  3. 2014 Dues - These are due in January each year - $8 for single member and $15 for a couple/family.
  4. Richard will update the Contact Form and pass it around at the February meeting for all to update their contact information.

Next meeting is Monday, February 24, 2014 at 7 p.m.
